I took the company car again, and I was unwelcomed by this:

Kinja'd!!!

Look, I know how to drive stick but I don’t do it often, cut me some slack!. If you’re ridin’ my bumper on a hill despite me putting on my hazards, I might bump your stupid truck when traffic starts moving!

I’m trying to get back up to speed on driving a stick myself, and yes, hill starts are my nemesis. The other day I met a traffic backup on a hill, and to add to the adventure I have an intermittent starting problem. (Twice now the starter has not responded). It was not good. I get a bit nervous and to not stall, I tend to give it more gas than needed leading the smell of burning clutch. At least I have a working handbrake.

Doing the handbrake start is a PITA in a truck (and some cars) when you DON’T HAVE A HANDBRAKE.

I’m getting one of these printed:

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t need it (legally) nor is it required by any driver (learner or otherwize) but I think people have seen enough movies to know what it is.

Oh, this has a state of the art, mechanically actuated, manual, lever like, handbrake system!

However I am not a big fan of it, I’m so used to autos that I genuenly suffer those.

But I mainly feel sad for those in manual challengers:

I got the giggles once when I had the Lada Niva. A bloke behind me at the traffic lights over estimated the Niva’s acceleration capacity AND the length of its first gear. So naturally he impaled his front bumper on my towbar...and I then tore it off as 2nd gear took hold.

My current ride occasionally inspires the same sort of stupidity on those rare visits to a big city. 1st is short but 2nd is epic....

Benzes have these too but that would make sense given they’re on the same platform. I drove one and it was one of the worst things ever. Couldn’t find reverse either.

It might be a Benz since my jeep at least has a spring release rather than a lever.

When I still had my learner’s permit, my mom let me drive on the trip to grandma’s house. I got caught at a light on a hill and the guy behind me pulled up so close I couldn’t see his headlights. This was in our tiny Mazda B-2000, so you know he had to be close.

In my desperation not to stall it, I managed to stall it. That was when I let out a single curse word, restarted the truck, then zoomed away from the intersection. It’s amazing what a little embarrassment and anger can do for your driving skills.

My mom didn’t say a thing until I had settled down and was moving smoothly at speed. I looked over at her, she smiled, then gave me a solid thump for cursing in front of her. Then we both had a good laugh.

I cursed today too... This person had their fog lights on and this car is so low I felt blinded.

First gear is pretty short
